“What can the Mother of the Bride wear?”…A Look at Liberty…

The mother of the bride, when choosing an outfit for her daughter’s weddings, needs to be careful when following  the seasonal fashion trends as she needs to follow first of all some specific rules in terms of sobriety and elegance.
Today I went to visit Liberty and I had the pleasure of meeting Gumer del Olmo, Art Director of Fashion and Fashion Stylist. We went thorugh some possible outfits for the mother of a bride who is going to celebrate an upcoming wedding in the next wintry months.

Walking through the womenswear shopfloor of the historical department store Liberty, Gumer del Olmo has selected some dresses from Valentino and Lanvin which he finds ideal for the mother of the bride.

This Lanvin dress is an example of understated and effortless glamour with a sense of asymmetry featured in the small ruffle on the right hip. (£1,230)

This Valentino crepe couture shift dress is the essence of simplicity. On the A line silhoutte is added a neat bow at the shoulder with a long ribbon draping across the back. (£1,470)

This Valentino dress, crafted in Alençon lace, is demure and elegant. The flare shape fastens with a delicate pussy bow tie, featuring sheer sleeves and fitted shirt cuffs. (£2,340).

For a lower budget Gumer del Olmo showed me the Cathrin dress with the William for Liberty collection. A timeless and chic garment made in the UK from fine wool crepe with a pure silk lining in rare Liberty archive print (£795).

Gumer del Olmo suggested also to visit the Vintage Section where you can find exclusive Pierre Cardin and Balengiaga garments that could be altered and adapted to the client’s silhouette.

To complete the outfit the Spanish fashion stylist could not resist pairing the dresses with some Manolo Blanik shoes.

Regarding the bodyshape , Gumer says “we shouldn’t be obsessed with our figure while wearing a beautiful outfit which makes us special.”… “Every lady is different and they are all attractive in different ways. Self-confidence and beautiful skin are key”.

What do we need to complete the outfit?

“Sometimes it is easier to complete a simple outfit if we have valuable or vintage jewellery. Elegance comes in simple details. Let’s give them the attention they deserve”.

In your experience what is your most beautiful memory of a mother of the bride and her daughter?

“I specially remember my mum in 2004 when my sister got married. She was a bit worried because she is a bit overweight…She wore a beautiful peach crepe full-length garment by Valentino, with the traditional Spanish lace mantilla over the head… she felt incredibly beautiful, sufficiently dressed up for the occasion, and that is what people saw in her: an incredibly gorgeous and confident woman”.
